The National Museum of Art, also known as the National Gallery of Art, is a massive gallery located in Washington, D.C. The gallery focuses on the art of those who have had historic ties to the United States of America, with a focus on American, British, Spanish, French, Dutch, Flemish and Italian arts. With a variety of art styles, ranging from paintings to sculptures, there is a little of something for everyone at the National Museum of Art.

The National Museum of Art is a two building, multi story complex with garden cafe and four wings of galleries. There is a sculpture hall, as well as a Rotunda in the upper floor of the west building. The ground floor is dedicated to prints, drawings, sculptures, decorative arts and is the location of all temporary exhibitions that are currently visiting the museum. The east building contains shops and auditoriums, as well as extra galleries that are used as needed. There are also a great deal of offices and storage facilities located in the east building that is not open to the public.

The National Museum of Art can be gone through in one day. However, with the constant rotation of traveling exhibitions, there is almost always a reason to return to the museum. If you have never been to the National Museum of Art, it is suggested that you give yourself extra time so that you can give each gallery the time it deserves.

The National Museum of Art is a federally funded museum. However, the museum operates on the significant amount of donations received from the public and private sectors. If you wish to support the museum, there are several ways that you can do so. You can give the gift of art to the museum of either money or time. For major donations, you can join the Circles. For the casual donation, you can give to the general support fund. If you are considering supporting the National Museum of Art, you can refer to their website or contact the museum directly in regards to your donation.

Volunteers are expected to remain with the museum for a period of time due to the amount of training that is involved to make successful guides or Docents.


The National Museum of Art is located on the National Mall between 3rd and 7th streets at Constitution Avenue NW. The gallery is open seven days a week with the exception of Christmas and New Year’s.
