The Atlanta History Museum, a part of the Atlanta History center, bears one of the richest collections of American history in the south west. The museum, a part of a thirty three acre complex, has several permanent exhibitions, and plays host to a variety of temporary exhibitions. In addition to this, the museum has created a variety of traveling exhibitions that are available to other interested museums.
The Atlanta History Museum is more than just a museum showing off the accomplishments and history of the American people. On the large campus, there are several historic houses that have been preserved for the generations to explore. These houses stand as they did hundreds of years ago, with the same furnishings and items found from the eras they were built in. These famous houses show the pride of the southern culture, and give insight into the plantations that existed around the time of the Civil War. While there are still some of these elegant manors still in existence, very few of them are maintained as historic landmarks.
In addition to the remembrance of the Civil War and the cultures of those who lived in the Atlanta region, the Atlanta History Museum also hosts the world’s most complete collection of Olympic medals and trophies for visitors to enjoy. As host to the Olympic games, many of the artifacts from the games were transferred to the museum, where they are on permanent display.
If you wish to visit the Atlanta History Museum, there are several things that you will want to keep in mind. First, with such an extensive grounds, the museum takes quite a bit of time to completely go over. If you plan a trip the museum, give yourself adequate time to visit the museum proper as well as all of the historic houses found on site. There is a lot of walking involved at the Atlanta History Museum, so make sure that you wear comfortable shoes.
The Atlanta History Museum survives on the donations of contributors, as well as on the admittance fees to the museum and grounds. General admission allows access to the two main houses, and all of the museums on the complex grounds. Admission also includes access to the extensive gardens, but does not include access to the midtown museum.
